This is one of many tree ferns growing on the West Coast of the South Island of New Zealand. They like the damp climate there and can grow up to about 20ft tall. Also known as whekī in Māori or botanically as Dicksonia squarrosa. Other common names include the rough tree fern, brown tree fern or harsh/hard tree fern.
