The aluminum sheet is offset from the wall by a 3/4" thick wooden frame which is attached to the back. These koi are at the Byodo-In Buddhist Temple on O'ahu, Hawai'i. This temple is a replica of the 900-year-old Byodo-In located in Uji, Japan. It is located in one of the most peaceful locations in O'ahu - the Valley of the Temples.
