Description
Macquarie Lightstation occupies a prominent position on Sydney Harbour's southern headland overlooking the Tasman Sea.
The original lighthouse was finished in 1818, but the sandstone used eroded over time, and this lighthouse was built in 1883 to replace it. For a short time the two towers stood side-by-side. The original light was powered by a number of oil lamps set in reflectors that revolved using a weight system, similar to a pendulum clock. Today the light is fully automated and is operated by Australian Maritime Safety Authority.
